Mining

Of all Germany’s mineral resources, coal is the most important. Major deposits can be found in the Saar, Aachen and Zwickau regions, as well as from the Ruhr, where 80% of Europe’s coal is produced.

Other resources include zinc, lead, rock salt, iron ore, copper, tin and uranium, which are abundant throughout the country.

Germany’s extractive mining industries make up around 1% of GDP, generating an estimated US$27.8 billion. In contrast, steel and non-ferrous metal processing represented 6-7% of output.
